Serving those who are responding to God’s call to love.

All Because of a Walmart Stuffed Animal.

Valentine’s day is coming. I just visited Walmart. Here it comes again. Another holiday where all candy companies come up with their best design and re-sell the same candy they just sold us for 90% off because it had the previous holiday’s design on it, rendering it useless. The isles are filled with cheap heart shaped gifts ranging from mugs with candy to giant sized teddy bears. I have thoughts.

  • First thought: I see the giant $40 stuffed animals…why? Will this somehow convey to someone a deep and abiding love more than just showing them through action?
  • Second thought: The world is wasting its resources…is ANYONE watching? Wake up world!
  • Third thought: Why are we collectively so accepting of this?
  • Fourth thought: I watched the news and weather channel for the first time in years last week and I was in awe over the pace, the commercials, the whole delivery that is apparently normal now. What are we watching, doing, repeating and joining in on? Can we agree there are other options?
  • Fifth thought: Not worth repeating.

What is happening in our world? All I could think of was the book of Ephesians verse 5:  13) But everything exposed by the light becomes visible and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14) This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
We are sleeping and need to wake up. Do we not think that the enemy is constantly at battle seeking new ways to distract and encourage wastefulness of time and resources? He is a liar and deceiver. I am like anyone, in that, I love Valentine’s Day. It’s fun to use that day as a reminder of His love for us and our love for each other. It’s a beautiful thing. Romantic dinners, sweet handwritten cards, But for $40, you can commit to loving a child that has no hope for a future. If it hadn’t been laid right before my eyes, I too, would be a sleeper. But I can’t stay asleep when I Skype every week with these beautiful bright eyed children that eagerly look to me for hope and support. They understand that this man called Jesus has brought them love and joy, even in the midst of horrific circumstances. What else can $40 do? Think about it? What else can your time and attention do besides watch Kardashians or shop at the mall for the next style. This, as usual is not to guilt us all into no shopping and celebrating, but its’ a valid check in on our status. As we all budget for this new year, let’s think about not only how and where we spend our money, but how and where we spend our time, talents and attention!
I challenge you, on this day that we can throw away upwards of $20-$100+ dollars, to consider sponsoring a child or giving a one-time gift in honor of someone you love. As far as time goes, we can always use some volunteers! Check out how you can help! Blessings, LC
