Giving Tuesday

I don’t know about you, but I have so many different ministries I want to give to, that “Giving Tuesday” is making it hard to choose. My husband and I have already prayerfully chosen several organizations/individuals that we feel called to share with, but more come across our paths every day and it makes it really hard to discern which one gets added and which one doesn’t.

One thought: Giving more. I recently read an article by a young couple Jeff and Mandy Rose) that have a great way of looking at their success. They have chosen to see their personal success (financial gain) as an opportunity not to get more for themselves, but as a way to give more away. So instead of getting a raise and deciding that now they can get that new car or piece of furniture, they have put aside an account that holds extra blessings to be distributed or held for planned or unforeseen giving they want to do. This is such a sweet way of doing life. I don’t think you have to “make” more to participate in this kind of living. I think it can extend down to those that are barely scraping by. If you are blessed with extra clothes or hand me downs, instead of selling them, give them away. If you get an unexpected bonus at work, think about how it can be used to bless someone else.

Another thought: Look at your spending. It is easy to suddenly find yourself living above your budget. It happens slowly. A little more here, a cute pair of jeans on sale there…an extra coffee here, out to dinner there… Stop. Pull back the reigns and look at your banking. Where has the money gone? Where is your weakness? When we self indulge, it often parallels our walk with God. How much time has been spent with Him on a daily basis? Every single day, is an opportunity to stay near God or stray away. Don’t forget that it is a choice and that it’s a discipline.

Last thought: Matthew 9:35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.37 Then He said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest.”
The more believers, the more will be distributed. By giving something, you can make a big impact. Here are some words… “divvy up, spread out, share, contribute, divide up, multiply, expand, apportion”…I think sometimes we think, “What will ten dollars do?” Let me tell you. If you give ten, then chances are greater that someone else will give ten. Now we have twenty. Look at the van fundraiser. Do you think for a second, I didn’t panic thinking there is No WAY we could raise twenty thousand dollars? Scary. What happens if we put ourselves out there and then it doesn’t happen? What if we fail? Do you think that thought doesn’t cross our minds? Well it does. Every single time we take on a person called into love, we have a brief moment of fear…”what if?” It is scary. It’s scary to live in faith. There is no greater adventure. But as we give over our fears to the Lord, He takes them, and turns them into bravery, into confidence in Him and pretty soon, we have faith so strong, we expect Him to do great things! Think about this… Matthew 6:26-27 says, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”
We also need to remember this: “There isn’t enough room in your life for both fear and faith. Each day, you must decide which one gets to stay.”

So as you go about your “Giving Tuesday” consider living in this mindset all year. Pray about it alone or with your significant other and make a plan as to how you choose to live out your blessing.
