Serving those who are responding to God’s call to love.

Reckless Love

This Sunday during worship I got a word from God. Well, actually a few words that I want to share with you. I know many of you. I may have raised children with you, I may have been your coach, your teacher, your youth leader or you were friends with my kids. We may know each other from church, school or work. Regardless, you know I love God and you know I have a heart for kids. I specifically have a heart for lost kids.
Now I am not necessarily talking about the kids that are lost because of drugs, sex or rock and roll. Although that may be the case, but I am talking about ALL lost kids. They come from all parts of society. They may have it all or they may have little. Either way, my heart is for them. Like MY HEART IS FOR THEM. I was them.
So this Sunday as our worship team was singing a new popular song (as they do)…The Holy Spirit started reaching my heart. Before I tell what happened, I want to share about two things I learned about worship that really changed the way I approach it. Many years ago, when my kids were still attending The Great Escape Rockies, one of our pastors came along one time. I watched her worship and I knew she was making a connection I was sure I wasn’t. After the session, I went to talk to her and asked her how she worshipped. I hope you’re not disappointed by the very simple response she gave, but it was simple. She said she loves to worship because this is where she gets to praise God and connect to him. I had to think about that for a bit. Too easy. So easy, it kinda sounds dumb as I write. But let me tell you, I really thought about that. I started practicing and purposefully releasing myself to him and it changed me forever.
Years later, Jon Piper gave a sermon that resonated with me. He challenged the crowd to think about the lyrics and be sure that what they were singing was inline with Scripture. If it was inline, then really sing it….PROCLAIM it. If it wasn’t, don’t sing it. I had already had a moment years ago when I was singing “Chains be broken, lives be healed” from the song, Hosanna. I remember applying the words to real people that I was interceding for. My worship gained POWER! Whoah! It was crazy!
So back to Sunday. The song, which I am sure you will recognize was, Reckless Love, by Bethel. As I was singing the lyrics, “Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God. Oh, it chases me down flights ‘til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine. I couldn’t earn it, I don’t deserve it, still You gave yourself away. Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God!” I found myself moved, but the lyrics that day, weren’t for me. Oh, I know they were for me too…but during this moment, I was moved to sing for the lost…for the young adults we long to help at Love’s Calling.
If you are a parent, a teacher, a youth worker…anyone…you may know those that are lost and broken. I learned again recently of yet another suicide. What about the school shootings? The ones that are shot, but also the shooter. All broken. Broken, broken, broken. Friends!!! We have to wake up! The world is not feeding our young solid food. It’s Captain Crunch at best. They need a Savior. Yoga won’t heal them. Shopping at the mall won’t heal them. Vacations, Proms, good grades, award/achievements, winning games, tattoos, purple/grey/pink hair won’t heal them…(all these things are great by the way), but they won’t heal our kids.
Lets look at these lyrics…
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God! Oh, it chases THEM down flights ‘til THEY’RE found, leave the ninety-nine. THEY couldn’t earn it, THEY don’t deserve it, still HE gave himself away. Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless LOVE OF GOD!!!
Join me this week singing this over our lost young adults. Singing it over our grand-children, our children, our neighbor kids, our friends kids, over all of them. There is a GOD SHAPED HOLE in our youth. We need to be interceding for them in prayer. I pray this speaks to you as it did to me this Sunday. Thank you God for sending the Holy Spirit to cover me in Your truth. I receive it and I will continue to love these lost. I will help you as you pursue them as you do, leaving none behind! You promise to find us when we are lost. Lord, we pray that they will turn toward you and receive what you have to offer. We pray this in Your HOLY name! Amen.

Matthew 18: 12“What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.
